Del's Devotions

WELCOME

We welcome you to our church web site.  We hope you find this site useful in learning more about our church, our activities and the community in which we serve.

Our Mission:  We are called to bear witness to God’s ongoing creative purposes, revealed in the person of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our mission is to connect people of all ages with God and with each other through the Spirit of Christ … by nurturing holy relationships, encouraging practices of faithful living, and reaching out to reveal the love of Christ in the world.

Who we are:   We are part of the United Church of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination that began in 1957 as a result of a merger between the Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. We are a “social action” church in that we believe that everyone is God’s beloved son or daughter. Our congregation believes that they need to minister to all people, regardless of age, economic status, race or creed.

No one can be excluded from the fellowship of the Church! In each monthly Communion Service, it is made clear that everyone is welcome to partake at Christ’s table. Everyone is welcome to attend our church and to participate fully in the life of our congregation.

The Roberts Congregational United Church of Christ is a church of open hands to help and open arms to welcome all persons.

Bible Excerpt
Go and learn what this means, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.

Reflection

The woman on the phone asked me, "Are you saved?" The caller had read something I'd written and determined from it that I probably was not. And this concerned her. So she gave me a lecture about Jesus--a long one--about what he'd done for me and what I owed him.

Listening to her made me feel like I was being reprimanded by Mrs. Martin, my elementary school teacher, or interrogated by a bill collector. "Well, just when WILL you be able to remit the full amount?"

I will never be able to remit the full amount, and neither will this lady. But we both keep trying, and when we fail, God grants us mercy. If we take God's forgiveness to heart, sometimes it really works and lets us skip finding fault with others and looking for someone to blame. Instead, we can follow God's example and give people a break. God wants mercy out of us, too.

Don't point fingers and place blame; don't offer that sacrifice to God, because God doesn't want it. Jesus came "to call not the righteous but sinners." God is not up in Heaven sending down snide remarks to the righteous about the sinners in their midst (or advising them to call people up and ask if they're saved). God is too busy showing mercy for the sins, failures, lapses, transgressions--whatever you want to call them--of absolutely everyone.

Prayer
God, thank you for the eternal and infinite mercy you show us all. Without it, where would we be? Amen.

Blessings to you all.

Del.
